Subspecies
Acrocephalus agricola (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Paddyfield Warbler (Acrocephalus agricola) and White-browed Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus tangorum) contra Alstrom et al. (1991) but following Helbig and Seibold (1999).

Forms a superspecies with White-browed Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus tangorum) and Blunt-winged Warbler (Acrocephalus concinens), and has been considered conspecific with one or both. Differs from each, however, in combination of plumage characters and biometrics; furthermore. Geographical variation poorly understood, as color differences heavily influenced by effects of plumage wear. Subspecies capistratus sometimes merged with nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • septimus Gavrilenko, 1954   -  Breeds eastern Europe (Romania, Bulgaria) east to southern Ukraine and western Kazakhstan (lower R Ural and lower R Ilek). Non-breeding south-eastern Iran and western Indian Subcontinent.
  • capistratus (Severtsov, 1873)   -  Breeds south-western Siberia and Kazakhstan (except west) east to upper R Yenisey and western Mongolia, south to north-eastern Iran, Tajikistan and north-western China (Xinjiang), possibly also Afghanistan. Non-breeding Indian Subcontinent.
  • agricola (Jerdon, 1845)   -  Breeds central Asia (details uncertain). Non-breeding eastern Iran and Indian Subcontinent.
