Description (10)
Image of Pied Avocet
  Large. Long, thin, upturned bill, long legs. Sexes alike.

Adults: Mostly white but crown, hindneck, scapulars, sides of back, outer lesser and median coverts, outer 6 primaries, black. Longest scapulars, tertials, greyish-brown. Eye, dark brown. Tail, mostly pale brownish-grey. Two broad white bars in mostly black wings. Underwing, white with tips of 6 outermost primaries, black. In flight and from below looks all white with black wing tips. Bill, black. Legs, blue-grey, partially webbed.

Immatures: Black is replaced with brownish-grey. Most of white upperparts mottled with brown and buff. Bill, black. Legs, blue-grey.

Vagrant to Benin, Burundi, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Faroe Islands, Finland, Gibraltar, Iceland, Latvia, Liberia, Luxembourg, Madagascar, North Korea, Qatar, Rwanda, Togo.

Europe through western and central Asia to south-eastern Siberia and north-eastern China, and locally through northern Africa to eastern and southern Africa. Winters from western Europe and Africa through Middle East to north-western India and south-eastern China.
 
Population
Estimated population is 210,000 - 460,000 (2010).

Nest
A shallow scrape on the ground, in the open, near water, sparsely lined with shells and stones.

Eggs (Guide)
3 - 4; smooth, pale buff with brownish spots and blotches. Incubation: about 23 days.

Subspecies
Clinal increase in size from western Europe east across Asia.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus)
Smaller. Bill is straight. Legs are pinkish-red. Head has less black. Wings are black. In flight, lacks white wing bars.
