Subspecies
Although Anas crecca was split by Sangster et al. (2001) into Common Teal (Anas crecca) and Green-winged Teal (Anas carolinensis) and this treatment was followed in BirdLife International (2004), AOU (1998) do not adopt this treatment and this source is now followed here.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • crecca Linnaeus, 1758   -  Most of northern and central Palearctic.
  • nimia Friedmann, 1948   -  Aleutian Islands.
  • carolinensis Gmelin, 1789   -  Widespread. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Green-winged Teal (Anas carolinensis).
