Vagrant to Bermuda, Jamaica, Virgin Islands (U.S.).

Forms superspecies with White-breasted Hawk (Accipiter chionogaster), Plain-breasted Hawk (Accipiter ventralis) and Rufous-thighed Hawk (Accipiter erythronemius), all of which have traditionally been included within present species, but differ on morphology, ecology and probably behaviour. Also close to Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) and associated species.

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

• perobscurus Snyder, 1938   -  Queen Charlotte Is; possibly also mainland coast of British Columbia.
• velox (Wilson, A, 1812)   -  Alaska and Canada south to California, Arizona, New Mexico and Alabama (USA). Winters south to Panama.
• suttoni van Rossem, 1939   -  Extreme southern New Mexico (USA) southern locally to Veracruz (Mexico).
• madrensis Storer, 1952   -  Guerrero and perhaps western Oaxaca (southern Mexico).
• striatus Vieillot, 1807   -  Hispaniola, in both Haiti and Dominican Republic.
• fringilloides Vigors, 1827   -  Cuba.
• venator Wetmore, 1914   -  Puerto Rico.
• chionogaster (Kaup, 1852)   -  Southern Mexico to Nicaragua.
• ventralis Sclater, PL, 1866   -  Venezuela to western Bolivia.
• erythronemius (Kaup, 1850)   -  South-eastern Bolivia and southern Brazil to Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina.
