Subspecies
Morphological and behavioural evidence suggests genus most closely related to Legatus and nesting behaviour links with Pitangus. Molecular data indicate strong support for a clade consisting of present species and Dusky-chested Flycatcher (Myiozetetes luteiventris) as sister-group to one formed by Rusty-margined Flycatcher (Myiozetetes cayanensis) and Social Flycatcher (Myiozetetes similis). Subspecies occidentalis possibly better merged with nominate. Further study is required.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • granadensis Lawrence, 1862   -  Eastern Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica south to central-eastern Panama.
  • occidentalis Zimmer, JT, 1937   -  Eastern Panama (Darién), northern and western Colombia (west of Andes) and north-western Ecuador (south to northern Manabí and southern Pichincha).
  • obscurior Todd, 1925   -  Central and eastern Colombia (lower Magdalena Valley south to south-eastern side of Serranía San Lucas, southern from western Meta and Vaupés, and widely east of eastern Andes) and south-eastern Venezuela (central and southern Amazonas, western Bolívar) south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru (east of Andes), western Brazil (east to northern Roraima, western Amazonas and Rondônia) and northern Bolivia (south to Cochabamba and northern Santa Cruz).
