Subspecies
Morphological and behavioural evidence suggests genus most closely related to Legatus and nesting behaviour links with Pitangus. Molecular data indicate strong support for a clade consisting of present species and Social Flycatcher (Myiozetetes similis) as sister-group to one formed by Grey-capped Flycatcher (Myiozetetes granadensis) and Dusky-chested Flycatcher (Myiozetetes luteiventris). South American subspecies require closer scrutinty. Birds from eastern Panama described as additional subspecies, harterti, on basis of smaller size, but subsequently considered inseparable from hellmayri.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
hellmayri Hartert & Goodson, 1917 - Eastern Panama (eastern from Canal Zone), tropical northern and western Colombia (west of eastern Andes), western Venezuela (Maracaibo Basin, and western slope of Andes from western Lara south to Táchira) and western Ecuador (south to El Oro and western Loja).
rufipennis Lawrence, 1869 - Northern Venezuela (north of R Orinoco), eastern Colombia east of eastern Andes (Norte de Santander south to western Caquetá and Vaupés) and eastern Ecuador.
cayanensis (Linnaeus, 1766) - Southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolívar, Delta Amacuro), the Guianas, northern and central Brazil (R Negro east to Maranhío and Piauí, south to eastern Acre, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Goiás and western Minas Gerais), south-eastern Peru (Madre de Dios) and northern Boliva (south to Cochabamba and northern Santa Cruz).
erythropterus (Lafresnaye, 1853) - South-eastern Brazil (southern and eastern Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro).
