Subspecies
Zenaida asiatica (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into White-winged Dove (Zenaida asiatica) and West Peruvian Dove (Zenaida meloda) following SACC (2005).

Probably more closely related to Columba than to most other members of Zenaida, but tentatively retained in this genus at present. Often considered conspecific with West Peruvian Dove (Zenaida meloda), but important differences in vocalizations and morphology. Validity of subspecies australis requires critical evaluation; coloration highly variable, and birds from Veracruz and Costa Rica were found to be indistinguishable.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • mearnsi (Ridgway, 1915)   -  Baja California, southern Arizona and New Mexico south to Guerrero and Puebla (south-central Mexico). Also Tres Marias Is (off central-western Mexico).
  • asiatica (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Lower Rio Grande Valley (Texas) south to Isthmus of Tehuantepec, southern on both slopes through Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to Nicaragua. Also southern Bahamas through Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola to Puerto Rico; Grand Cayman, San Andrés and Providencia.
  • australis (Peters, JL, 1913)   -  Western Costa Rica to western Panama.
