Vagrant to Panama (NB).

Until recently considered conspecific with Choco Poorwill (Nyctiphrynus rosenbergi), but differs vocally and may not even be closely related.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• lautus Miller, W & Griscom, 1925   -  North-eastern Nicaragua, north-western Costa Rica and possibly Panama (Canal Zone); recently discovered breeding in extreme eastern Honduras.
• ocellatus (Tschudi, 1844)   -  Central-southern Colombia, north-eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru to eastern Brazil and south through Bolivia and Paraguay to north-eastern Argentina and extreme southern Brazil.
