Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Gymnostinops. Often considered conspecific with Amazonian Oropendola (Psarocolius yuracares), mainly because intermediate-looking individuals that are thought to be hybrids occur in area of range overlap in Pará. No details of pairing behaviour or other aspects of natural history in contact zone are yet available, and further research is required. Both are sometimes considered part of the species group formed by Montezuma Oropendola (Psarocolius montezuma), Black Oropendola (Psarocolius guatimozinus) and Baudo Oropendola (Psarocolius cassini).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • yuracares (d'Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1838)   -  Amazon and upper Orinoco Basins from southern Venezuela (western Bolívar) and Colombia (Meta and Guainía) south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and central Bolivia (Santa Cruz), east to central Brazil (east to R Negro and R Tapajós). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Amazonian Oropendola (Psarocolius yuracares).
  • neivae (Snethlage, E, 1925)   -  Southern Pará (between R Tapajós and R Tocantins) to northern Goiás and Mato Grosso, in east-central Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Amazonian Oropendola (Psarocolius yuracares).
  • bifasciatus (Spix, 1824)   -  Eastern, southern Amazonia.
