Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat destruction and degradation through greatly expanding the road network, promoting human immigration and settlement, logging, agricultural expansion and mining, conversion of forest to oil palm plantations, are the main threats.

Voice
A two-part song. A series of bubbly, tinkling notes overlaid by metallic sounds followed by a loud, liquid gurgle 'skol-l-l-l-l-wool'. A nasal 'wak' call.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Sometimes placed in genus Gymnostinops. Forms a species group with Montezuma Oropendola (Psarocolius montezuma) and Black Oropendola (Psarocolius guatimozinus), and all possibly conspecific. Amazonian Oropendola (Psarocolius bifasciatus) and Amazonian Oropendola (Psarocolius yuracares) sometimes considered part of same group, and bare facial parts of present species resemble those of Amazonian Oropendola (Psarocolius bifasciatus).
Similar Species
Black Oropendola (Psarocolius guatimozinus) only reliably distinguished by bare blue cheek patch, pink wattle and culmen base.
