Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Masked Yellowthroat (Geothlypis aequinoctialis).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
auricularis Salvin, 1883 - Western Ecuador, western Peru. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Masked Yellowthroat (Geothlypis aequinoctialis).
peruviana Taczanowski, 1884 - Upper Marañón Valley, in north-western Peru (probably also in adjacent south-eastern Ecuador). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-lored Yellowthroat (Geothlypis auricularis). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Masked Yellowthroat (Geothlypis aequinoctialis).
