Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Chestnut-breasted Wren (Cyphorhinus thoracicus) and Song Wren (Cyphorhinus phaeocephalus). Sometimes regarded as conspecific with Song Wren (Cyphorhinus phaeocephalus), an implausible treatment given the very distinct vocalizations of the two. It has been suggested that north-eastern subspecies possibly represent a separate species from western and southern subspecies. Species name often erroneously emended to aradus. The name is not of Latin origin but from a local native language, and as such must remain invariable.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • arada (Hermann, 1783)   -  Eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil (east from lower R Negro, south to Amazon).
  • urbanoi (J. T. Zimmer and Phelps, Sr, 1946)   -  Gran Sabana (south-eastern Bolívar), in south-eastern Venezuela.
  • faroensis (J. T. Zimmer and Phelps, Sr, 1946)   -  Region of Faro and í"bidos (probably also west to mouth of R Negro), on lower Amazon (Brazil).
  • transfluvialis (Todd, 1932)   -  Base of eastern Andes in southern Colombia (Caquetá) east to north-western Brazil (east to R Negro).
  • salvini Sharpe, 1882   -  Southern Colombia (Putumayo), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (Loreto).
  • modulator (d'Orbigny, 1838)   -  Lowlands of eastern Peru, western Brazil (eastern, south of Amazon, to R Madeira) and northern Bolivia.
  • interpositus (Todd, 1932)   -  North-central Brazil from R Madeira east to R Tapajós, south to northern Mato Grosso.
  • griseolateralis Ridgway, 1888   -  Southern bank of lower Amazon east of R Tapajós, south to R Jamanxim (Brazil).
