Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Chestnut-breasted Wren (Cyphorhinus thoracicus) and Musician Wren (Cyphorhinus arada). Sometimes regarded as conspecific with Musician Wren (Cyphorhinus arada), an implausible treatment given the very distinct vocalizations of the two species.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • richardsoni Salvin, 1893   -  Caribbean lowlands of south-eastern Honduras and eastern Nicaragua.
  • infuscatus J. T. Zimmer, 1932   -  Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica and north-western Panama (Almirante).
  • lawrencii Lawrence, 1863   -  Panama (except north-west) and extreme north-western Colombia (Golfo de Urabá).
  • propinquus (Todd, 1919)   -  Tropical lowlands of north-western Colombia.
  • chocoanus (Meyer de Schauensee, 1946)   -  Western Colombia (from near Panamanian border) south to northern Chocó.
  • phaeocephalus Sclater, 1860   -  Western Colombia (southern Chocó) south to southern Ecuador (El Oro).
