Subspecies
Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner (Philydor erythrocercum) and Ochre-bellied Foliage-gleaner (Philydor ochrogaster) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Philydor erythrocercum following SACC (2005). Gender agreement of species name follows David and Gosselin (2002b).

Finer details of plumage suggest that this species is most closely related to Slaty-winged Foliage-gleaner (Philydor fuscipenne), and was formerly treated as conspecific. Distinctive montane subspecies ochrogaster often treated as a separate species but despite striking plumage differences, however, song is similar to, if not indistinguishable from, that of nominate. Subspecies lyra varies clinally in plumage coloration from west to east. Species name often spelt "erythrocercus", but must agree with neuter gender of genus.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • erythrocercum (Pelzeln, 1859)   -  The Guianas and north-eastern Brazil (east from R Negro, south to R Amazon).
  • subfulvum Sclater, PL, 1862   -  Southern Colombia (south from western Meta), eastern Ecuador and northern Peru (north of R Amazon, west of R Ucayali).
  • suboles Todd, 1948   -  South-eastern Colombia (Amazonas) and north-western Brazil (north of R Amazon, east to R Negro).
  • lyra Cherrie, 1916   -  Amazonian eastern Peru (south of R Amazon, east of R Ucayali), Brazil (eastern, south of R Amazon, to northern Maranhío, south to Mato Grosso) and northern Bolivia (Pando, northern Beni).
  • ochrogaster Hellmayr, 1917   -  Andes from central Peru (south from Huánuco) south to north-central Bolivia (south to Cochabamba, sight reports to north-western Santa Cruz). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Ochre-bellied Foliage-gleaner (Philydor ochrogaster).
