Subspecies
Close relationship to Slaty Antwren (Myrmotherula schisticolor ) and Salvadori's Antwren (Myrmotherula minor ) suggested by similarities in morphology, behaviour and vocalizations. Often grouped with those and White-flanked Antwren (Myrmotherula axillaris ), Rio de Janeiro Antwren (Myrmotherula fluminensis ), Rio Suno Antwren (Myrmotherula sunensis ), Ihering's Antwren (Myrmotherula iheringi ), Plain-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula behni ), Ashy Antwren (Myrmotherula grisea ), Unicolored Antwren (Myrmotherula unicolor ), Alagoas Antwren (Myrmotherula snowi ), Long-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula longipennis ), Band-tailed Antwren (Myrmotherula urosticta ) and Grey Antwren (Myrmotherula menetriesii ) as the "grey antwren assemblage", although this grouping possibly not monophyletic.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
sunensis Chapman, 1925 - South-central Colombia (eastern slope of Andes in Meta and Putumayo) and Ecuador (Sucumbios, Napo, Pastaza); specimen from "mouth of R Curaray" (Peru) may have originated from Ecuador.
yessupi Bond, J, 1950 - East-central Peru (Huánuco, Pasco). Also south-western Amazonian Brazil (R Juruá but precise location uncertain, probably also R Javarí).
