Subspecies
Thamnophilus palliatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Lined Antshrike (Thamnophilus palliatus) and Lined Antshrike (Thamnophilus tenuepunctatus) following SACC (2005).

Has been considered conspecific with Lined Antshrike (Thamnophilus tenuepunctatus), but the two have adjoining ranges with no apparent barriers and no evidence of intergradation. Both belong to the "Barred Antshrike (Thamnophilus doliatus) group", which also includes Chapman's Antshrike (Thamnophilus zarumae), Bar-crested Antshrike (Thamnophilus multistriatus), Rufous-winged Antshrike (Thamnophilus torquatus) and Southern Rufous-capped Antshrike (Thamnophilus ruficapillus). The validity and distributional limits of the subspecies of present species are in need of re-examination.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • similis Zimmer, JT, 1933   -  Central Peru (Huánuco, Junín).
  • puncticeps Sclater, PL, 1890   -  South-eastern Peru (Cuzco, Puno), northern Bolivia (Beni, La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz), and Brazil south of R Amazon and west of R Tapajós (extreme south-eastern Amazonas east to extreme south-western Pará, south to Rondônia and north-western Mato Grosso).
  • palliatus (Lichtenstein, 1823)   -  South of R Amazon and east of R Tapajós in northern Maranhío, south-eastern Pará and north-eastern Mato Grosso, and coastal north-eastern Brazil (Paraíba south to northern Bahia).
  • vestitus (Lesson, R, 1831)   -  Coastal eastern Brazil from southern Bahia south to Rio de Janeiro.
