Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 500 m, occasionally up to 1,300 m.
Colombia, Venezuela.
Caribbean slope in northern Colombia (southern and west to northern Bolívar) and north-western Venezuela (east to Miranda).
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Has historically been considered most closely related to Black-crested Antshrike (Sakesphorus canadensis ) on basis of morphology, but is vocally quite distinct.
