Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Silvery-cheeked Antshrike (Sakesphorus cristatus) and Collared Antshrike (Thamnophilus bernardi). Subspecies pulchellus appears to be morphologically and vocally distinct from others and may deserve species status; this taxon and proposed subspecies phainoleucus (Riohacha, in northern Colombia) and paraguanae (Paraguaná Peninsula, in north-western Venezuela) appear to intergrade, and are better merged. Differences among some or all of the other subspecies may be clinal, and individual plumage variation within each substantial. Therfore, distributional limits unclear.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • pulchellus (Cabanis & Heine, 1860)   -  Northern Colombia (Caribbean slope from Guajira south to northern Chocó, lower Magdalena Valley south to southern Santander) and extreme north-western Venezuela (Zulia, western and central Falcón, Lara). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Streak-fronted Antshrike (Sakesphorus pulchellus).
  • intermedius (Cherrie, 1916)   -  Eastern Colombia (Vichada and Meta) and Venezuela north of R Orinoco (eastern Falcón, Portuguesa and Apure east to Anzoátegui).
  • trinitatis (Ridgway, 1891)   -  North-eastern and southern Venezuela (Sucre, Monagas, Delta Amacuro and, south of R Orinoco, Bolívar and northern Amazonas), Trinidad and Guyana.
  • canadensis (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Surinam and coastal French Guiana.
  • fumosus Zimmer, JT, 1933   -  South-western Venezuela (southern Amazonas) and extreme northern Brazil (northern Roraima, extreme northern Pará).
  • loretoyacuensis (Bartlett, 1882)   -  Locally in north-western Amazonian Brazil (along R Negro, R Branco and R Solimíµes), extreme south-eastern Colombia (south-eastern Amazonas) and north-eastern Peru (along R Amazon, lower R Marañón and R Ucayali).
