Forms a superspecies with Greater Wagtail-Tyrant (Stigmatura budytoides).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• napensis Chapman, 1926   -  Along larger rivers of central Amazonian and south-western Orinoco drainages in extreme south-eastern Colombia (near Leticia), south-western Venezuela (along R Orinoco), eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru and north-central Brazil (east to R Tapajós).
• bahiae Chapman, 1926   -  North-eastern Brazil (Pernambuco, north-central Bahia). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bahia Wagtail-Tyrant (Stigmatura bahiae).
