Subspecies
Serpophaga araguayae, previously treated as a species in Collar and Andrew (1988), is now considered a subspecies of Grey Elaenia (Myiopagis caniceps) following Sibley and Monroe (1990, 1993).

Apparently closely related to Foothill Elaenia (Myiopagis olallai), but also suggested by some as possibly not belonging in present genus on grounds of sexual plumage dimorphism.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • absita (Wetmore, 1963)   -  Eastern Panama.
  • parambae (Hellmayr, 1904)   -  Chocó region of western Colombia and north-western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Choco Grey Elaenia (Myiopagis parambae).
  • cinerea (Pelzeln, 1868)   -  Eastern Colombia east through north-western and southern Venezuela (Zulia, Bolívar, Amazonas) to south-western Guyana and French Guiana, and south through eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and western Amazonian Brazil (east to R Purus) to northern Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Amazonian Grey Elaenia (Myiopagis cinerea).
  • caniceps (Swainson, 1835)   -  North-eastern, southern and south-eastern Brazil (Ceará, Alagoas, and from southern Mato Grosso and Maranhío south to Sío Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul), Paraguay, southern Bolivia (Tarija) and extreme north-western and north-eastern Argentina.
