Vagrant to Greenland, Grenada, Iceland, Ireland, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago.

Population
Estimated population is 6,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Hawaiian Coot (Fulica alai), Caribbean Coot (Fulica caribaea), Slate-colored Coot (Fulica ardesiaca), Red-knobbed Coot (Fulica cristata), Common Coot (Fulica atra) and White-winged Coot (Fulica leucoptera).

Hawaiian Coot (Fulica alai), Caribbean Coot (Fulica caribaea), Slate-colored Coot (Fulica ardesiaca) are sometimes considered subspecies of American Coot (Fulica americana).

Proposed subspecies grenadensis included in nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • americana Gmelin, 1789   -  South-eastern Alaska east to Nova Scotia, and south to West Indies, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Winters to west to Hawaii and south to Panama.
  • columbiana Chapman, 1914   -  Colombia and northern Ecuador.
