Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forest. From 700 - 1,000 m, occasionally up to 1,400 m.
Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama.
Costa Rica and Panama through western Colombia to western Ecuador.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Often placed in genus Popelairia , along with Wire-crested Thorntail (Discosura popelairii ), Black-bellied Thorntail (Discosura langsdorffi ) and Coppery Thorntail (Discosura letitiae ). Genus closely related to Lophornis .
No subspecies.
