Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From 500 - 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)

Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

Eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through clearance for cattle ranching and soy production, facilitated by expansion of the road network, is the main threat.

Subspecies
Often placed in genus Popelairia, along with Black-bellied Thorntail (Discosura langsdorffi), Coppery Thorntail (Discosura letitiae) and Green Thorntail (Discosura conversii). Genus closely related to Lophornis.
