Plum-crowned Parrot (Pionus tumultuosus) [XC745436]
by id from Corani Forest, Chapare, Departamento de Cochabamba, Bolivia (song, subsong)

Subspecies
Pionus tumultuosus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was provisionally split into Speckle-faced Parrot (Pionus tumultuosus) and Pionus seniloides by Stotz et al. (1996) but this treatment has not been adopted, following SACC (2005).

Subspecies seniloides often regarded as a separate species, but differences between them slight and superficial, appearing more appropriate for subspecific separation.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • seniloides (Tschudi, 1844)   -  Western Venezuela through central-eastern Colombia and northern Ecuador to north-western Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-capped Parrot (Pionus seniloides).
  • tumultuosus (Tschudi, 1844)   -  Central and southern Peru and mountains of Bolivia east to Santa Cruz.
