Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through agricultural expansion, logging and burning, is the main threat.

Voice
Unlike other wood-quail, song is loud whistled 'bob-white', highly reminiscent of Santa Marta Antpitta (Grallaria bangsi).

Subspecies
May be conspecific with Gorgeted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus strophium), Venezuelan Wood-Quail (Odontophorus columbianus), M0000003501* and Tacarcuna Wood-Quail (Odontophorus dialeucos).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

atrifrons Allen, 1900 - Santa Marta Mts, north-eastern Colombia.
variegatus Todd, 1919 - Northern end of eastern Andes, north-eastern Colombia.
navai Aveledo & Pons, 1952 - Perij� Mts, north-eastern Colombia and north-western Venezuela.
