Habitat
Lower forest canopy. From 300 - 1,800 m.

Estimated population is unknown (2011).

Voice
A repetitive 'ser-weet ser-weet ser-weet' or 'di-duit di-duit'. Constant chattering in flocks. Also a series of high-pitched 'tchi-chi' notes.

Subspecies
Yuhina castaniceps (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Striated Yuhina (Yuhina castaniceps) and Indochinese Yuhina (Yuhina torqueola) following Collar (2006).

Formerly treated as conspecific with Indochinese Yuhina (Yuhina torqueola) and, normally, Chestnut-crested Yuhina (Yuhina everetti).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • castaniceps (Moore, 1854)   -  North-eastern Indian hill states (western and south of Nagaland), south-eastern Bangladesh, and western and south-western Myanmar.
  • rufigenis (Hume, 1877)   -  Sikkim and Darjeeling east to Bhutan and north-eastern India (western Arunachal Pradesh).
  • plumbeiceps (Godwin-Austen, 1877)   -  North-eastern India (eastern Arunachal Pradesh south to Nagaland), northern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
  • striata (Blyth, 1859)   -  Eastern and southern Myanmar (including Tenasserim) and north-western and western Thailand.
