Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Hoary-throated Barwing (Sibia nipalensis), and sometimes considered conspecific. Apparent hybrids with subspecies daflaensis of Hoary-throated Barwing (Sibia nipalensis) found in north-eastern India (western Arunachal Pradesh).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
daflaensis Godwin-Austen, 1875 - Southern China (south-eastern Xizang) and adjacent north-eastern India (central Arunachal Pradesh).
waldeni (Godwin-Austen, 1874) - North-eastern India (southern Assam, Nagaland and northern Manipur) and adjacent south-western part of northern Myanmar (Mt Saramati).
poliotis (Rippon, 1905) - Western Myanmar.
saturatior (Rothschild, 1921) - Northern Myanmar and southern China (north-western Yunnan).
