Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Streak-throated Barwing (Sibia waldeni), and sometimes considered conspecific. Apparent hybrids with subspecies daflaensis of Streak-throated Barwing (Sibia waldeni) found in north-eastern India (western Arunachal Pradesh). Birds from eastern Nepal east to Bhutan described as subspecies vinctura, but inseparable from individuals elsewhere in species' range.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
nipalensis (Hodgson, 1836) - Nepal to Bhutan.
vinctura Ripley, 1950 - Eastern Nepal to south-eastern Tibet (Pome District), Sikkim and Bhutan.
