First Described (Guide)
(Mandelli, 1873)

Habitat
Evergreen forest with large trees and bamboo on the edge of dense jungle. From 300 - 2,010 m.

Range (Guide)
Bhutan (B) (NB), India (B) (NB), Nepal (B) (NB).

Extreme eastern Nepal, Sikkim and northern West Bengal east to Bhutan and north-eastern India (north-eastern Arunachal Pradesh).
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2011) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat loss through cultivation and logging are potentially threats.

Habits
Usually small parties.

Food
Insects, particularly woodlice and boring beetles.

Voice
Alarm call is a subdued low 'hrrrh hrrrh hrrrh hrrr'it hrrrh hrrrh...'.

Subspecies
Sphenocichla humei (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Wedge-billed Wren-Babbler (Stachyris humei) and Chevron-breasted Babbler (Stachyris roberti) following Collar (2006).

Formerly treated as conspecific with Chevron-breasted Babbler (Stachyris roberti), but song is different.

No subspecies.
