Habitat
Secondary forest, edge habitats and undergrowth, cultivated habitats adjacent to forest patches. From 915 - 1,510 m.

Range (Guide)
Vietnam.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Habits
Singly, in pairs or in small groups, but apparently never in large groups like other members of the genus.

Subspecies
Garrulax merulinus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Spot-breasted Laughingthrush (Garrulax merulinus) and Orange-breasted Laughingthrush (Garrulax annamensis) following Collar (2006).

Until recently regarded as conspecific with Orange-breasted Laughingthrush (Garrulax annamensis).

Proposed subspecies toxostomina (from Manipur, in north-eastern India) considered inseparable from nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • merulina Blyth, 1851   -  North-eastern India (south-eastern Arunachal Pradesh south to Meghalaya, Mizoram and Manipur), western and northern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
  • laoensis Meyer de Schauensee, 1938   -  North-western Thailand.
  • obscura (Delacour and Jabouille, 1930)   -  South-eastern Yunnan (China), northern Laos and northern Vietnam (northern Tonkin).
