Jerdon, 1872

Habitat
Evergreen broadleaved forest. From sea-level - 1,800 m.

Range (Guide)
Cambodia (B), China (mainland) (B), India (B), Laos (B), Myanmar (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

North-eastern India and southern China to west, northern and eastern Myanmar, northern and central Thailand, Laos, western Cambodia and north-western Vietnam.
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Forest habitat loss through widespread logging and intensive shifting agriculture is the main threat.

Subspecies
Anorrhinus tickelli (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Tickell's Brown Hornbill (Anorrhinus tickelli) and Austen's Brown Hornbill (Anorrhinus austeni) following Rasmussen and Anderton (2005).

Forms superspecies with Tickell's Brown Hornbill (Anorrhinus tickelli) and are often treated as conspecific, but differ in some plumage details and in presence or absence of sexual dimorphism in bill colour. Birds from Thailand and Indochina sometimes recognized as subspecies indochinensis, but appear inseparable from other populations.

No subspecies.
