Glacier Finch (Idiopsar speculifer) [XC498325]
by id from Parinacota, XV Region, Chile (call, contact call)
Subspecies
Previously thought to form a superspecies with Common Diuca-Finch (Diuca diuca), but aspects of morphology, voice and typically hopping (rather than walking) locomotion suggest that it is not close to that species. Likely more closely related to White-throated Sierra-Finch (Ephippiospingus erythronotus) and Red-backed Sierra-Finch (Ephippiospingus dorsalis). Subspecies magnirostris doubtfully distinct from nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
magnirostris Carriker, 1935 - Highlands of central Peru (Ancash to Junín and Huancavelica).
speculifera (Lafresnaye & D'Orbigny, 1837) - Andes of south-central and southern Peru (southern from Arequipa, Cuzco and Puno; probably also this subspecies in Ayacucho and Apurímac), northern Chile (Arica-Parinacota and Tarapacá), western Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba and north-western Oruro), and north-western Argentina (Jujuy).
