Subspecies
Upucerthia dumetaria (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993; Stotz et al. 1996) has been split into Scale-throated Earthcreeper (Upucerthia dumetaria) and Forest Earthcreeper (Upucerthia saturatior) following SACC (2009).

Some similarities in plumage suggest that it is most closely related to the group formed by White-throated Earthcreeper (Upucerthia albigula), Plain-breasted Earthcreeper (Upucerthia jelskii) and Buff-breasted Earthcreeper (Upucerthia validirostris).

Proposed subspecies hallinani (northern Chile, north-western Argentina) appears to represent clinal extreme of paleness at northern end of range of hypoleuca. Patterns of geographical variation conform in general with Gloger's Rule, with populations from arid areas usually the palest in coloration.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • peruana Zimmer, JT, 1954   -  Andes of southern Peru (Puno).
  • hypoleuca Reichenbach, 1853   -  Western Bolivia, central Chile (Antofagasta south to Maule) and western Argentina (Jujuy south to northern Río Negro, east to Córdoba).
  • saturatior Scott, 1900   -  Central Chile (southern possibly from Malleco, to Valdivia) and south-western Argentina (western Neuquén south to western Chubut). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Forest Earthcreeper (Upucerthia saturatior).
  • dumetaria Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1832   -  Southern Chile (Aisén, Magallanes) and central and southern Argentina (Córdoba and Buenos Aires south to northern Tierra del Fuego).
