Subspecies
Anas flavirostris (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993; Stotz et al. 1996) has been split into Speckled Teal (Anas flavirostris) and Anas andium by SACC (2008).

Forms superspecies with Common Teal (Anas crecca). The two northern subspecies sometimes separated as one full species (Anas andium).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • altipetens (Conover, 1941)   -  Eastern Andes of Colombia to north-western Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Andean Teal (Anas andium).
  • andium (P. L. Sclater and Salvin, 1873)   -  Colombia, Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Andean Teal (Anas andium).
  • oxyptera Meyen, 1834   -  Andes from central Peru to north-western Argentina.
  • flavirostris Vieillot, 1816   -  Northern Argentina south to Tierra del Fuego; Falkland Is, South Georgia.
