Subspecies
Black-headed Waxbill (Estrilda atricapilla) and Kandt's Waxbill (Estrilda kandti) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Estrilda atricapilla following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

Sometimes placed with Kandt's Waxbill (Estrilda kandti) and Black-crowned Waxbill (Estrilda nonnula) in a separate genus, Krimhilda. May form a superspecies with Kandt's Waxbill (Estrilda kandti), and formerly considered conspecific. Recent studies of mitochondrial phylogeny indicate that nominate subspecies and subspecies avakubi appear as a sister-clade to Black-crowned Waxbill (Estrilda nonnula) and nominate subspecies of Kandt's Waxbill (Estrilda kandti).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • atricapilla Verreaux & Verreaux, 1851   -  Southern Cameroon south to PRCongo, east to north-eastern DRCongo.
  • avakubi Traylor, 1964   -  North-western and north-eastern Angola (Cabinda, northern Lunda Norte) and south-western and central DRCongo.
  • marungensis Prigogine, 1975   -  Marungu Mts, in south-eastern DRCongo.
  • kandti Verreaux and Verreaux, 1851   -  Albertine Rift region in montane east-central DRCongo, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Kandt's Waxbill (Estrilda kandti).
  • keniensis Mearns, 1915   -  Kenya (Mt Elgon, Aberdare Mts, Mt Kenya). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Kandt's Waxbill (Estrilda kandti).
