Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland and shrubland, dry forest, dry savanna, urban areas, rural gardens, arable land. From sea-level - 2,000 m.

Subspecies
Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer griseus), Swainson's Sparrow (Passer swainsonii), Parrot-billed Sparrow (Passer gongonensis) and Swahili Sparrow (Passer suahelicus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include swainsonii, gongonensis and suahelicus as subspecies of Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer griseus).

Forms a superspecies with Swainson's Sparrow (Passer swainsonii), Parrot-billed Sparrow (Passer gongonensis), Swahili Sparrow (Passer suahelicus) and Southern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer diffusus). All are often treated as conspecific.

Subspecies mosambicus of Southern Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer diffusus) considered by some authors to be asubspecies of Grey-headed Sparrow (Passer griseus).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • laeneni Niethammer, 1955   -  Mali and Burkina Faso east to western Sudan, south to northern Cameroon.
  • griseus (Vieillot, 1817)   -  Senegal and southern Mauritania east to Ivory Coast and to southern Sudan, south to northern Gabon and extreme northern Central African Republic. Also Bioko I (Fernandóo Po).
  • ugandae Reichenow, 1904   -  Northern Ethiopia, northern Eritrea and south-eastern Sudan south to Angola, extreme northern Namibia, Zambia, Malawi, central and north-eastern Tanzania and northern and north-eastern Zimbabwe.
