Habitat
Primary and secondary forest and at the forest edge. Occasionally feeds in nearby plantations and agricultural areas. From 850 - 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)

Cambodia (B) (NB), Vietnam (B) (NB).

Eastern Cambodia (south-eastern Mondulkiri Province) and southern Vietnam (southern Annam).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction through conversion to coffee plantations is the main threat.

Voice
Song of 3-4 notes as 'jhu'jhu'jhu'. A harsh 'chit' alarm call.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Paradoxornis gularis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Grey-headed Parrotbill (Psittiparus gularis) and Black-headed Parrotbill (Psittiparus margaritae) following Collar (2006).

Until recently considered conspecific with Grey-headed Parrotbill (Psittiparus gularis), but the two differ somewhat in morphology, plumage and voice.

Similar Species
Grey-headed Parrotbill (Psittiparus gularis) lacks black crown, has black throat.
