Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From sea-level - 4,054 m.

Côte dIvoire (B) (NB), Ghana (B) (NB), Guinea (B) (NB), Liberia (B) (NB), Sierra Leone (B) (NB), Togo (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status VU
Habitat destruction and fragmentation, hunting are the main threats.

Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged with Ceratogymna.

Brown-cheeked Hornbill (Bycanistes cylindricus) and White-thighed Hornbill (Bycanistes albotibialis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include White-thighed Hornbill (Bycanistes albotibialis) as a subspecies of Brown-cheeked Hornbill (Bycanistes cylindricus).

Distinctive subspecies albotibialis, with discrete range, possibly a separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • cylindricus (Temminck, 1824)   -  Sierra Leone east to Togo.
  • albotibialis (Cabanis and Reichenow, 1877)   -  Humid forests of Benin to Angola and Uganda.
