Habits
Singly or in pairs.

Food
Insects, including butterflies, bees, wasps, locusts and ants. These invertebrates are usually hawked aerially, killed and then eaten.

Nest
On the ground, composed of figs, straw and leaves, under a bush.

Subspecies
Black-rumped Buttonquail (Turnix nanus) and Hottentot Buttonquail (Turnix hottentottus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Turnix hottentottus following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993). This species is no longer recognised by BirdLife International.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Hottentot Buttonquail (Turnix hottentottus).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • nanus (Sundevall, 1850)   -  Ghana to Kenya, Uganda and south-eastern Cape Province. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Hottentot Buttonquail (Turnix hottentottus).
  • lucianus Stoneham,HF, 1931   -  Mts. of South Africa (south-western Cape Province to Port Elizabeth).
  • insolatus Ripley & Heinrich, 1960   -  Montane moorlands of central and southern Ethiopia.
