Subspecies
Long-tailed Paradise-whydah (Vidua paradisaea) and Northern Paradise-Whydah (Vidua orientalis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Vidua paradisaea following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
In Sudan, proposed subspecies kudugliensis (described from Kadugli, in southern Kordofan) and nilotica (from c. 16 km above Abu Zor, in Blue Nile) are synonyms of nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
aucupum (Neumann, 1908) - Southern Mauritania, Senegal, northern Gambia and southern Mali east to southern Niger and northern Nigeria.
orientalis (Heuglin, 1870) - Northern Cameroon, southern Chad, northern Central African Republic, south-central Sudan, northern Eritrea and north-western Ethiopia.
