Forms superspecies with Northern Long-eared Owl (Asio otus) and Madagascar Long-eared Owl (Asio madagascariensis). Has been treated as subspecies of Northern Long-eared Owl (Asio otus), but considered specifically distinct on grounds of biometrics, and plumage and vocal differences. Subspecies graueri sometimes considered inseparable.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• abyssinicus (Guérin-Méneville, 1843)   -  Highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea.
• graueri Sassi, 1912   -  Ruwenzori and Mitumba Mts in eastern Zaire/western Uganda, and Mt Kenya.
