Population
Estimated population is 50 - 249 (2010) and stable.
Status VU
Deforestation, introduced grazing mammals and predation by feral cats, and the threat is hybridisation with subspecies chathamensis of Red-fronted Parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae), are the main threats.

In natural crevices or hollows in dead or living trees.
Subspecies
Cyanoramphus auriceps (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Yellow-fronted Parakeet (Cyanoramphus auriceps), Chatham Parakeet (Cyanoramphus forbesi) and Malherbe's Parakeet (Cyanoramphus malherbi) following Boon et al. (2000).
Since 1930 commonly treated as a subspecies of Yellow-fronted Parakeet (Cyanoramphus auriceps), but genetic differences considerable. However, the two are very closely related.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Subspecies chathamensis of Red-fronted Parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae) which has crimson forecrown.
