Voice
Typical weaver chucks and squizzles.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Tanzanian Masked Weaver (Ploceus reichardi) and Lufira Masked Weaver (Ploceus ruweti) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include ruweti as a subspecies of Tanzanian Masked Weaver (Ploceus reichardi).
Has been thought to form a superspecies, or even to be conspecific, with Southern Masked Weaver (Ploceus velatus), Vitelline Masked Weaver (Ploceus vitellinus), Tanzanian Masked Weaver (Ploceus reichardi) and Katanga Masked Weaver (Ploceus katangae). Often treated as a subspecies of Tanzanian Masked Weaver (Ploceus reichardi). Molecular data suggest that its closest relative is Golden-backed Weaver (Ploceus jacksoni).
