Subspecies
Somali Short-toed Lark (Alaudala somalica), Athi Short-toed Lark (Calandrella athensis) and Erlanger's Lark (Calandrella erlangeri) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Calandrella somalica following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
May form a superspecies with Lesser Short-toed Lark (Alaudala rufescens), with which sometimes treated as conspecific, and Sand Lark (Alaudala raytal). Distinctive subspecies athensis sometimes considered a separate species. Described subspecies vulpecula (from northern Somalia) considered synonymous with nominate. Birds recorded in central Kenya of uncertain racial identity, tentatively included in megaensis.
somalica (Sharpe, 1895) - Eastern Ethiopia and northern Somalia.
megaensis (Benson, 1946) - Southern Ethiopia and northern and central Kenya.
athensis (Sharpe, 1900) - Southern Kenya (southern from Nairobi National Park and Athi Plains) and northern Tanzania. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Athi Short-toed Lark (Calandrella athensis).
