Subspecies
Red-capped Lark (Calandrella cinerea) and Blanford's Lark (Calandrella blanfordi) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Calandrella cinerea following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).

May form a superspecies with Greater Short-toed Lark (Calandrella brachydactyla), Red-capped Lark (Calandrella cinerea), Erlanger's Lark (Calandrella erlangeri) and Hume's Lark (Calandrella acutirostris). Sometimes considered conspecific with Greater Short-toed Lark (Calandrella brachydactyla), Red-capped Lark (Calandrella cinerea) and Erlanger's Lark (Calandrella erlangeri).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • blanfordi (Shelley, 1902)   -  Northern Eritrea.
  • eremica (Reichenow and Peters, 1932)   -  South-western Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rufous-capped Lark (Calandrella eremica).
  • daaroodensis C. M. N. White, 1960   -  Northern Somalia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-capped Lark (Calandrella eremica).
  • erlangeri (Neumann, 1906)   -  Highlands of Ethiopia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Erlanger's Lark (Calandrella erlangeri).
