Subspecies
Fawn-coloured Lark (Calendulauda africanoides) and Foxy Lark (Calendulauda alopex) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) are retained as separate species contra Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993) who include alopex as a subspecies of Fawn-coloured Lark (Calendulauda africanoides).

Often treated as conspecific with disjunct Fawn-coloured Lark (Calendulauda africanoides), but differs genetically and in structure (longer bill). Nominate subspecies very distinctive, separated geographically from intercedens. The two may represent different species. Described subspecies macdonaldi (southern Ethiopia) and longonotensis (eastern Uganda, western Kenya) considered synonymous with latter.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

alopex (Sharpe, 1890) - Northern Somalia and extreme eastern Ethiopia.
intercedens (Reichenow, 1895) - Eastern and southern Ethiopia, immediately adjacent north-western and south-western Somalia, eastern Uganda, Kenya and northern Tanzania.
