Subspecies
Pnoepyga albiventer (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Scaly-breasted Cupwing (Pnoepyga albiventer) and Taiwan Cupwing (Pnoepyga formosana) following Collar (2006).

Formerly treated as conspecific with Taiwan Cupwing (Pnoepyga formosana).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

pallidior Kinnear, 1924 - Northern India (western Himachal Pradesh) east to west-central Nepal.
albiventer (Hodgson, 1837) - East-central Nepal east to Bhutan and north-eastern Indian hill states (except Meghalaya), southern and south-central China (southern and south-eastern Xizang, northern and central Sichuan south to north-western Yunnan), northern and western Myanmar and northern Vietnam (western Tonkin).
