Subspecies
Pomatorhinus horsfieldii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Indian Scimitar-babbler (Pomatorhinus horsfieldii) and Sri Lanka Scimitar-babbler (Pomatorhinus melanurus) following Rasmussen and Anderton (2005) and Collar (2006).

Has been treated as conspecific with Indian Scimitar-babbler (Pomatorhinus horsfieldii) and sometimes also White-browed Scimitar-babbler (Pomatorhinus schisticeps).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

melanurus Blyth, 1847 - Western part of south-central Sri Lanka (wet lowlands and western hills).
holdsworthi Whistler, 1942 - Eastern part of south-central Sri Lanka (dry lowlands and eastern hills).
