Extreme southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Garrulax erythrocephalus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron erythrocephalum), Assam Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron chrysopterum), Silver-eared Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron melanostigma) and Malay Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron peninsulae) following Collar (2006).

Until recently, this species and Assam Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron chrysopterum), Silver-eared Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron melanostigma) and sometimes Golden-winged Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron ngoclinhense) were regarded as conspecific with Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush (Trochalopteron erythrocephalum).
