Monticola sharpei (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Forest Rock-Thrush (Monticola sharpei) and Amber Mountain Rock-Thrush (Monticola erythronotus) following Goodman and Weigt (2002) and (Collar 2005). However, Forest Rock-Thrush (Monticola sharpei) and Benson's Rock Thrush (Monticola bensoni) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Monticola sharpei on the basis of evidence in Goodman and Weigt (2002) and Outlaw et al. (2007), plus a review of recordings of vocalisations by the BirdLife International.
A possibly undescribed rock-thrush, reported from western Madagascar, is evidently intermediate in plumage between the two.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Forest Rock-Thrush (Monticola sharpei).
